Quarter 2 week 5

Week 5 12/6/10 – 12/10/10

  As we are reading poetry and looking at various parts of poems, can you notice some of the same figurative language in your independent reading? Using your notes from this week, give examples of each of the parts of figurative language we've been discussing.   You may not find all types. If you can’t find any, look at the poem you put on the moodle or the lyrics to your favorite song.  The chart attachment is at the bottom of this page 'Week 5 Blog', use it to set up your blog.   



            The book I am reading is called Darkness Before Dawn by Sharon M. Draper, It talks about Jonathan disappear when he almost kill Keisha. Some of figurative language I found was simile, alliteration and onomatopoeia.
On page 181,I found  simile that says"he grinned like puppy as he walked me to the door" that is simile because she is comparing the boy to a puppy, because when the boy was leaving he made a puppy face. 
On page 240, I found alliteration, and it says" streaked with  reddish-brown highlights that showed up in bright sunlight" because "highlight and sunlight" sounds the same. 
On page 245, I found onomatopoeia, and it says"the light  cracked, the thunder roared." It's onomatopoeia because it's sound that makes the sound it is describing the sound.




 

Week4 12.3.2010 book blog

            We've been looking and studying how we relate to our characters and the real world around us. Now it's time to put yourself into your character's shoes. Thinking about the main character of your book, consider what you would do in their situation.  1. What would your reactions be? 2. How would you handle the situation? 3. What would you do differently? Be sure to use complete sentences and EVIDENCE to support your thinking. 



           In my book the "Darkness Before Dawn "by sharon Draper,Where I am in it talks about Keisha (character) almost being killed by Jonathon Hathaway(the principled son and new student). Because Jonathon took Keisha to his aparetment and try to kill her. O page 195 it says"I stood trembling behind the chair, terrified I rab once more to the door, screaming for help and fruitlessly ratting the locker doorknob, HELP".
    My reaction to what's happineing in my book is differently because  keisha just went with him, but she really don't know him that well,  she just like him the way he talks to her.  If  I were inkeisha's  shoes before going to his apartment or restarent I have to know him very wellin case  if he is starnger kill.
   I would handle the situation by runnning away from him, and callthe police for help and arredt him for what he did. So hew can leave me alone.

In my book the forged by fire it talks about Gerald who been living with his aunt and when she passed away, he  moved to new home with his stepfather and step sister and his mom. I know the Universal theme is how society acts or reacts because the step father abuses his daughter and his step son becuase it says on my book"he looks like a hit man".

 In my book  Forged by fire by Sharon m.draper. The main character is Gerald, who is abused by his mom.  There are five character, Gerald's aunt, Monique, angel and his step father, Jordan. Gerald's aunt is caring and loving person. Monique she is the bad character in the book. Angel is Gerald's step sister she got born when monique was in jail (she was pergant when she was going to jail for abusing her son).

         The problem in my book is when Gerald is choosing either he lives with his aunt or his mom, stepsister and his problem. and he solved the problem by choosing he is gonna live with his aunt because she been raising him in about 6 years. and he doesn't like his mom.

         The story takes place in gerlad' house and it's on the morning when monique was in Gerald's aunt house and surprise Gerald(it was his birthday.

   The antagonist is Monique because she abused her son for 6 years. And the protagonist is Gerald's aunt because she takes a good care of Gerald until his mom comes and get him.

 I think the Universal theme is how society acts and reacts because my book talks about a boy abused by his mom and father. The mom leave him at home until for about 6 years now he lives with his aunt, in about 6 years his mom finally came home. And his dad kept hitting if he does something that jordan don't like.

 The plot in my book is that when Gerald aunt dies, Gerald suddenly moves to a new home filled with anger and abuse.Jordan(stepfather) makes Gerald miserable and gerald only likes his stepsister. He always protects from Jordan. And the problem is Jordan has been abusing his family.Gerald send Jordan to jail for 6 and8 years. In 6 years he came home sitting at the sofa waiting for his family at first he talks like he 's nice but he didn't even change anything and he is still abusing them. At the end jordan died because their were fire at their aprtement.



  The conflict is character vs. character because in pg.78 it says "Jordan was a very bad man. He was doing bad thing."  My connection on this part is there is some people who have a child and their being mean.

9.22.10 - 9.24.10 Week 5

  In your book, what are some of the ways that your character expresses themselves through their emotions? How do they show love? Anger? Hate? Why is this important to you as a reader?

      In my book Tears of Tiger by Sharon M. Draper, some of  way that my character express themselves  through their emotion is Andy sees a psychologist to help him "talk through" his problems to deal with the guilt caused by Rob's death. Andy  shows love by writing to his best friends parent how sorry he is and that show that he didn't mean to and he is showing the parent that he loves them "..I remember_ spending the night at your house, and staying up all night watching cable, eating the pizza that we oreder at 3:00 a.m" on pg.104. It is important to me as a reader because the reader want to know how the character shows love or hater.

 It is important to use our observations/knowledge of the world around us to understand and make meaning out of what we read. Thinking about your experience with the writing excursion, how much importance does your author place on how two characters in your book dress/look? How do you know this?

                

             In my book the Tears of a Tiger by Sharon M.Draper. She describes
Andy and Keisha because the she want us to know what kind of character were reading about.

         First,  she describe Keisha. She is Andy's girlfriend. But the author doesn't really describe her. The only thing I know about her is she really like Andy. At middle when Andy killed himself she was very pissed out. After that happened they were mad at other. Second,  the author describes what kind of guy is Andy. Andy is a black guy. she is a normal guy but when he kill his best friend in accident every say he is a killer.

As readers, we need to be able to look at that is happening in the world around us so that we can make connections to what we are reading. Thinking about the world you live in, what connections can you make to your book.

      

                            starting new book

            In my book the character was blaming him self that he killed his best friend.

but at the end Andy (the character) killed himself.  so my connection to the world is many teenger drink and then drive without thinking about the consequence.

Talk about what your book is about. Describe the setting, the main characters and the plot. Think about and discuss what you believe the Universal Theme to be. (This is a basic summary to get you back into the habit of discussing what you are reading with other readers).

      The book  I was reading was the BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA by Katherine Paterson I like it because it's about a boy named Jess who was the fastest runner and when he start school their were a new student who runs fast then him.So, they became friend. They build a private place called Terabithia. At the end Jess friend died by some accident thing.  I think the universal theme is how how society act and rects because jess was her best friend friend and when she died he want to her house.

            As we look into how our characters in our books are expressing themselves, how does that, in turn, make you think about how you express yourself?
          My characters expresses themeselve by how they talks and he shows his classmate that he runs fast. I like to express myself by running because I like to run everyday and practice. I like to run long distance.

            Bridge to the Terabithia by Katherine Paterson.


                    My book is about a boy named Jess who wants to be the fastest
 runner in his grade. He been practicing all summer. In the first day of school
there is a new girl named Leslie who runs fast then Jess. Jess find peace in drawing,eventhought his family and teacher din't support him. Leslie tells jess
that she had orginally wanted to move from Arlington to Lark Creek, but now that she is here she hates it. she explain to him," You never know ahead of time what something's really going to be like".


             Jess and Leslie devoolpe an intese friendship. loneliness effect many people in this story not just Jess or Leslie,but also some of the teachers,Jenice,and even may belle. Jenice Avery and her friend are bullies,harassing younger and weaker student.
           Leslie and Jess got a secret place that is privite place for both of them. The secret place is called Terabithia. Because it was supposed to be a secret place, Jess is upset when he find out that may belle followed hom to Terabitha. After Leslie's death, Jess's opinions of other change. when his dad told him he doesn't belive him.
